Blogmas Day 4 | DIY Christmas In A Jar

I love making my own decorations at Christmas as its lovely to have something eye catching and unique and not something that everyone in your street will have. Also when people admire said decoration and ask where you bought it they will think “Wow, isn’t she talented?!” when you tell them that you made it yourself.

This craft project actually started off being a snow globe and ended up being a Christmas scene in a clip top jar sans water, so I suppose you could class it as a waterless snow globe. I ended up going for the waterless version in the end for two reasons; 1) even though I put fimo on the inside of the lid to raise the gingerbread house so it would be above the neck of the jar so you could see it, it just looked crap and 2) I didn’t have any glycerin to put in the water but a quick search on Google showed that this could be replaced by using baby oil which I did have. I tried it along with the fake snow and then again with silver glitter but it just made them clump together and looked more shit-storm than snow-storm it didn’t have the desired effect I was looking for so I decided to rethink the snow globe. I remembered that I had some clip top jars that I bought when we had mice (the joys of country living) and thought that I would use one of those instead.

Christmas In A Jar

What you need:

A Clip Top Jar
Fake Snow (I got mine from Poundland)
Fimo (to stick your decorations in)
Decorations for inside your jar
Ribbon

To make:

Soften your fimo by rolling it in your hand to make it more pliable and then pat it into a disc shape.
Place it in the bottom of the jar ready to stick your decorations into.
I bought a pack of 4 pink trees from Hobbycraft and the gingerbread house was a tree decoration from Accessorize that I cut the hanger from but use whatever miniature decorations you can find.
Position your decorations in the fimo to however you want your scene to look and then fill the bottom of the jar with the fake snow.
Close the jar, to finish it off tie a ribbon around the top.

These Christmas in a Jar are so easy and take very little time to make, being waterless as well means that you don’t have to worry about any water leaking out when it’s packed away after Christmas. You could get your kids to make them for their teacher or grandparents or even yourself for your friends as they would make a lovely homemade gift.
